Question by Kayla Hills: How are intervals useful for ear training?
And can a interval have diffrent notes or are they the same note all the time

Best answer:

Answer by Greg
Intervals are one of the fundamentals of ear training. Without being able to identify intervals, you won’t be able to do much of anything in aural theory.

An interval is the vertical distance between any two notes, and can start on any note.

Question by jezusrox1: Does anybody know any tricks to interval ear training? Even if I practice they end up sounding the same to me?
I’ve been working on musictheory.net and teoria.com I have a midterm coming up in March and I don’t want to fail! Thanks for your help!

Best answer:

Answer by SupishLyJube
I take piano theory too and I found that I had the same problem you have (Everything just kind of sounded the same). My piano teacher however gave me a trick to learn some of the intervals, and now I am doing much better at naming them. You basically play the notes of the interval and associate them with the first few notes of a song. Here are a few example I feel helped me the most…

Major 2nd: Just sounds one note higher
Minor 3rd Below: Oh say can you see
Perfect 4th: Oh Christmas tree
Perfect 5th: Twinkle twinkle little star
Perfect 6th: My Bonnie
Perfect Octave: Somewhere over the rainbow

You can use those songs as an example or you could make up your own that would help you remember them even more.

Good Luck on your midterm!! Hope I was able to help out a bit…

Question by Figure skater: How long does it take to learn guitar?
I wanna learn the guitar and be able to do most chords. I am 13 years old and I want to know how long it might take to learn them. My brother started when he was 17 years old and about less than a year later he learned most of the chords. How long will it take me do u think?? Cuz I heard that the younger u are when u start a sport or instrument, the faster you’ll learn. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Bryan
If you take lessons, not so long to get the basics. sooner you start, the sooner you will get good.

I’ve played several different instruments and as hard as I tried, I never had any luck with learning to read notes, I always played by ear and composed with no written music. Can I do the same with guitar?

Best answer:

Answer by TitoBob
Of course. Just learn the technique, and try to learn to read guitar chord charts which often appear on the sheet music, and you should be OK. I play keyboards by ear all the time (for over 50 years!).

A duet between my brother and I… I was originally going to play this song by myself, but I realized I would have a super hard time if I did so, since the bass notes were kinda hard to reach when everything else in the music was so high up. And my brother was already next to me, eager to watch me play another Maple Story song.. so I asked him for his help. It may seem like very little help, knowing that he’s only play a total of four different bass notes, but it helps a lot in this song. For only recording this a few times, we didn’t do too bad putting it together as an ensemble. Oh, maybe I should mention that all these arrangements (if I remember correctly) are created by a person named Levin Tan. Kudos to him, because I would’ve never been able to play something by ear so well lol. ENJOY!

Even if I listen to them like at the same time I’m trying to figure out how to play it, I can’t. I think it’s amazing when people can play good by ear, but I don’t know how.
