On Silent Night I don’t play the F Major but Am so it goes like : C – G – Am – C and so on. So I guess the theory does not give a lot of flavor when playing by ears. I play mostly by ear and I experiment with chords it gives the melody the flavor. Its like the spices in food. Otherwise I would like to congratulate you, you are a great teacher and teach straight to the point and keep the class interesting. I wish I have a teacher as knowledgeable as you. Thumb up.

@unterlord well, firts of all, theres no rules in music, starting from there, you can start your progresion in any degree you like the thing is you have to know whats the message you wana send to the person listening, becouse we are kinda tired of hearing those “2-5-1″ chord progressions over and over.
so if you play lets say a Cmajor chord on the first, then people would expect maybe a Am, or a G7. but you throw a D#7 and then a G#major. and it turns out that you where on the key of G# not in C

  29. swingking338 says:

@unterlord Rachmaninov was one of the composers who liked to obey all the rules of music. Good observation though =D

  31. unterlord says:

Great teacher but I had a question. Moonilight sonata, written in C#m starts on it’s fifth, the G#, however, Rachmaninov’s prelude in C#m (op3. no2) begins with this intro: A-G#-C#, then procedes woth a c# chord. Is this rule possibly void (starting on the tonic, 3rd, or 5th) in any circumstance, or is it only void when considering an intro?

  32. unterlord says:

i have learned a lot from this wonderful teacher but i have a question about starting with the dominant note (the 5th) and how often this rule applies with with other key signatures aside from CMajor. For example, Rachmaninov’s prelude in C#m (op. 3 no.2). It starts with on an A. After this 3-note into, the song starts with c# chords. Is the intro (A-G#-C#) void of this rule then? Moonlight sonata, also written in C#m does start with G#, it’s fifth.
